Amateur Radio is a fascinating hobby.  Packed with all sort of activities and items that may interest most anyone. 

  • There are technical aspects that offer a wide variety of designing, building and modication of equipment. 
  • Antennas are a great area that attracts a large following of Hams.  Just as involved as technical equipment, antennas offer the opportunity for one to become proficient in the design, construction and effective use of antennas. 
  • Additionally radio wave propagation is another fascinating portion that involves understanding the Sun's affect on the Earth's atmosphere.  Understanding propagation is important for determine where conditions might prevail throughout the world.   
  • Public Service is another area that holds interest for new and old Hams alike. 
    • Support public special events.  For years the Dothan Hams have supported the National Peanut Festival
    • Additionally Hams have supported short term communications needs for Hospitals and other entities throughout the our community and communities thorughout the nation.
  • Operating activities are abound in Ham Radio.  Every year the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) hold Field Day.  This is an event where Hams from around the US go to the field and setup their station(s) and make contact with other such station around the US. 
    • These exercises for establishing a field station where one did not exist before, help Hams face the challenges of putting a complete station on the air and keep it there for 24 hours.  Participants will perform under extreme field condition for EMERGENCIES that might occur anywhere within our country.  Such disaster events as Hurricane Katrina in 2006 and the Spring Tornadoes in the Southeast (2011).  During both of these disasters Ham Radio became the only means of communications for both local and national officials and first responders.   Actually Ham Radio keep on working when cell phones and the internet cease to function. 
    • Additional operating events include DXing, Contesting and just plain ole ragchewing (just talking to each other).  Each one of these is in it own right a lot of fun.
  • This page has only touched on the fun that one can have in Amateur Radio.
